Hi Reader,

First, a little confession! In our last newsletter, we were supposed to celebrate the Japanese Moon-Viewing Festival (tsukimi) that took place on September 17th. But we got carried away by autumn leaves and woodland creatures instead. So, this week, we're back on track with our tsukimi edition!

Tsukimi is a beautiful Japanese tradition that celebrates the autumn moon, and it's often paired with offerings like dango (sweet rice dumplings) and seasonal produce. We'll dive into more about this lovely festival later, but for now, I'm excited to share some special origami projects perfect for the occasion.

We'll be folding traditional rabbits, along with a selection of boxes, including the iconic sanbo box used to display offerings during the festival.

So, grab your paper, and let's fold under the beautiful September October moon!

๐ŸŽ‘ Japanese Culture: The Story of Tsukimi

Tsukimi (ๆœˆ่ฆ‹), meaning "moon viewing," is a traditional Japanese festival that dates back over a thousand years. Celebrated at the beginning of fall when the moon is at its brightest, tsukimi is a time to appreciate the beauty of the autumn full moon. The festival is steeped in symbolism, with the moon representing a good harvest and offerings like dango (sweet rice dumplings) and seasonal produce made to honor the moon and pray for abundance.

One of the most iconic symbols of tsukimi is the rabbit, often depicted pounding mochi in folklore, as seen in the shadows of the full moon. During tsukimi celebrations, people set up displays with sanbo boxes and special wooden offering stands to hold their offerings and honor the moon. It's a peaceful and reflective celebration, perfect for gathering with loved ones and admiring the night sky.
