❤️ Origami Hearts for Valentine’s Day #1

Hi Reader,

Valentine’s Day always gives me a good excuse to fold a few extra hearts. This week, I’ve been leaving small paper surprises around the house. I already slipped an origami heart corner bookmark into Saki’s book. She hasn’t found it yet, and I’m quietly enjoying that moment on my own.

In this issue, I’m sharing a selection of Valentine’s Day origami models, all centered around hearts. You’ll find two beautiful designs by the late Francis Ow, an origami artist well known for his work on heart models. The origami heart card and the heart box are especially fun because they’re connected: the box is folded directly from the card, turning one simple model into another.

🫶 Origami Inspirations

This week’s origami inspiration comes from Nguyễn Quang Huy, a young origami artist from Vietnam.

He designed this model while at school, folding it from a paper bill. The result is a strikingly symmetrical piece, with two hands coming together to form a heart. Simple at first glance, it has a strong visual impact and feels very expressive.

The model is quite accessible to fold and makes a nice introduction to shaping. To keep the fingers in place, you gently shape them using a mix of paper glue and water, which adds a sculptural touch to the finished piece.

The instructions will be available on our site very soon.

📖 A Book We Loved: The Breath Between Folds

The Breath Between Folds is a beautiful photobook by origami artist Monica Xing Gao. Beyond her strong artistic vision, Monica is also an exceptional folder, bringing her models to life with remarkable precision and sensitivity. Rather than teaching how to fold, the book invites you to slow down and simply look. Through quiet, elegant photography, it captures origami as a living art, full of balance, tension, and subtle emotion.

🌟 Work in Progress

We have some very exciting models in the works:

  • 🦏 An origami Rhinoceros (by Caleb Witte)
  • 🦑 An origami Squid (by Caleb Witte)
  • 🐉 An origami Dragon v2 (by Sébastien Limet)

We’re also putting the final touches on our Origami Crash Course by Boice Wong. It’s a series of 7 videos designed to help complete beginners get started with confidence.

In the next newsletter, I’ll share an origami heart envelope and an origami heart corner bookmark. The instructions are already available for our Origami Friends.

Until then, happy folding!
