Hi Reader,

In Japan, traditional clothing is more than just beautiful attire. It's a cherished part of life's most memorable moments. Whether it's the elegant kimono worn at the Coming of Age ceremony or during a wedding, or the light, playful yukata for summer festivals, each garment tells a story of heritage, celebration, and the changing seasons.

Inspired by these timeless traditions, this week, we're diving into the world of origami clothing! From the graceful folds of an origami kimono to the sharp creases of a neatly folded origami shirt and necktie, these models capture the essence of Japanese style and elegance in a few simple steps. As you fold, imagine the joy of wearing these clothes for special occasions or the festive spirit of a summer evening in a colorful yukata under the stars.

✨ Paper Story: Chiyogami and Yuzen Patterns

Yuzen and Chiyogami are often used interchangeably, but they have interesting stories behind them. Yuzen patterns were first crafted for Kyoto's booming kimono industry, known for their intricate designs with touches of gold. As for Chiyogami, it refers to the lovely repetitive designs applied to paper in the Edo period (1603-1868).

There are many varieties of Chiyogami, but if you haven't given a Yuzen paper from Japan a try, you're in for a treat. It's one of our absolute favorite papers at Origami.me. It's so beautiful and a joy to fold. Perfect for creating models like the ones in this newsletter, decorative models like the sitting crane, and origami boxes!

🎨 Origami Tip: Color Shifts

In many origami models, reversing the right fold will bring a color change to your final design. We recently made a video showing a simple example of the shirt origami. By reversing one fold, you can get a white or plain collar.

📣 Event: The Fifth Origami World Marathon

The Fifth Origami Marathon is happening on September 14-15. Over 48 hours, 48 models will be taught by their very own designers. I'm really looking forward to it, especially after seeing the amazing list of models and artists who will be there. You can join in live online or watch the videos later at your convenience. If you're interested, you can reserve a spot at the Origami-shop or on Eventbrite.

We've been really busy making improvements to our website and growing our social media and YouTube channels. That's why we've decided to make Origami Unfold a biweekly newsletter. This means we can pack it with even better content for you.

I'll see you in two weeks for our autumn-themed newsletter. Happy folding!

💛 Monthly Sponsored Project

Every month, we pledge to donate 1% of our profits to a cause that is important to us. As creators who use paper for origami, we are conscious of our environmental footprint. Again, this month, we are excited to support the One Tree Planted project, where our donations will help reforest areas in need.
