Hi Reader,

Next week is the Obon festival, one of the most culturally rich times of the year in Japan.

It's a time to honor our ancestors, celebrate with family, and embrace the beauty of summer. Memories of my childhood flood back.

I remember helping my grandmother prepare for Obon, lighting up the welcoming and sending off fires that would mark the passage of our ancestors' spirits between the house and their graves.

It's also very hot (especially this year), and fans are required, even during nighttime. A lovely moment to appreciate the glow of the paper lanterns while treating yourself to some delicious food from the street stalls.

📒 In this week's newsletter, we have a special Obon-themed edition just for you:

  • A folding tip
  • Origami lantern and fan diagrams
  • An Obon cultural highlight
  • More origami instructions

✨ Folding Tip

To make your folding experience more enjoyable, keep your workspace clean and tidy. It's best to work on a clutter-free desk with a non-slip surface like a craft mat and use good lighting to see your folds clearly.

👘 Did You Know?

During Obon, one of the most iconic traditions is the Bon Odori. This dance welcomes the spirits of ancestors. Communities gather in yukata and dance around a yagura to the beat of Japanese instruments. The simple, repetitive dance moves make it easy for everyone to join in and celebrate together!

📣 From the Community

This weekend is the 29th Origami Tanteidan Convention, one of the biggest origami events. Even if it's too late to register for the convention, you can grab the book here.

I hope you had fun with this week's origami newsletter.

At Origami.me, we're working hard to add more pictures and diagrams to the site. We're also getting ready to launch our YouTube channel, and I'll be sure to keep you in the loop about it in the coming weeks.

I'm wishing you all a lovely Obon time!

💛 Monthly Sponsored Project

Every month, we pledge to donate 1% of our profits to a cause that is important to us. As creators who use paper for origami, we are conscious of our environmental footprint. This month, we are excited to be supporting the One Tree Planted project, where our donations will help reforest areas in need.

See you next week!
